Heterogeneous pores distribution in polyurethane expanding foams detected via X-ray computed microtomography

Abstract

X-ray computed microtomography (μ-CT) was applied as a noninvasive three-dimensional (3D) imaging technique for characterization of solid cellular material microstructure. Comparison between morphologies of two versions (summer and winter) of polyurethane (PUR) expanding foam (commercially available as the one-component 1K hand-held foams, applicable in building sector) was done. The evident relationship between processing and microstructure was explained. The most significant morphometric parameters were obtained via quantitative and qualitative 3D microstructure μ-CT analysis. The analysis embraced computing: dimensions of the selected structural elements (struts or pores), the average surface areas and volumes either of solid matrix or pores (open and close), as well as porosity assessment. The pores diameters (structure separation) statistical distributions were found and resulted as heterogeneous for both PUR versions, as revealed via proposed Gaussian μ-CT data analysis (“double Gauss” model).
