Effect of plasticizer with silanol groups on the structure and properties of polylactide and thermoplastic corn starch blend

Abstract

The effect of organic-inorganic plasticizer on the structure and selected properties of the blends of polylactide (PLA), maleinated polylactide (MPLA) and thermoplastic corn starch (TPS) has been investigated. Two types of reactive plasticizers with silanol groups were used: MEOS – product of the reaction between methyloctyldichlorosilane and ethyltrimethoxysilane, and MOBS – product of the reaction between methyloctyldichlorosilane and isobutyltriethoxysilane. Twin-screw co-rotating extruder was used for the preparation of thermoplastic starch, compatibilizer MPLA and PLA/MPLA/TPS (60/10/30) blends with different plasticizer content (1.5, 3 or 5 wt %). Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) methods were used to study the structure of the products. The thermal properties were determined using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Static and dynamic mechanical properties were also investigated. It has been found that the addition of plasticizer significantly increases the elongation at break and impact strength of PLA/MPLA/TPS blends, improving this way their fracture toughness.
