The influence of synthetic polyhydroxybutyrate on selected properties of novel polyurethanes for applications in medicine. Part II. Polyurethanes containing cycloaliphatic diisocyanates in the hard segment

Abstract

Polyurethanes, in which the soft segments have been built from synthetic telechelic atactic poly([R,S]-3-hydroxybutyrate) with OH groups at both ends (a-PHB) and polycaprolactanodiol (PCL) or from a-PHB and polyoxytetramethylenodiol (PTMG), while the hard segments are a product of the reaction between 4,4'-methylene dicyclohexyl diisocyanate (H1,2MDI) and 1,4-buthanediol (1,4-BD) have been synthesized (Table 1). The influence of the introduction of a-PHB into the soft segment of these novel aliphatic polyurethane materials designated for applications in medicine on selected thermal (Table 2) and mechanical (Table 6) properties and also on the sorption of water (Fig. 1.) and vegetable oil (Table 4) was determined. The weight of the dry residue after boiling hexane extraction as well as the efficiency and influence of sterilization on the mechanical properties of the obtained products was evaluated. DSC results reveal that the introduction of a-PHB with a methyl side group into the soft segment disorders both the soft and hard segment regions and shifts the glass temperature to higher values while lowering the crystallinity of the polyurethanes. The presence of synthetic a-PHB in the PUR chain slightly improves water sorption, but decreases the oil sorption of PUR prepared from PTMG and a-PHB. The weight of the dry residues after boiling hexane extraction of the PUR/a-PHB samples did not exceed the standard values. Microbiological tests confirm the possibility of efficient plasma sterilization of the obtained aliphatic PUR. Increased values of elongation at break tests were obtained after sterilization of the samples. The obtained aliphatic po
