Application of selected polymeric wastes in the formulation of rigid polyurethane foams

Abstract

The properties of rigid polyurethane foams which have been modified with recycled waste polymers such as foamed polyurethanes, polystyrene or suspension poly(vinyl chloride) have been studied. The influence of the glycolysates, which are produced during microwave heating of the PUR wastes (Table 1), polystyrene and poly(vinyl chloride) recyclates on the cell structure (Figs. 3 and 5, Table 3), compressive strength (Figs. 1, 2, 4 and 6), water absorption and flam-mability (Tables 2-7) of the obtained thermoisolation foam materials was determined. The presented polymer waste management and utilization process allows for a decrease in the consumption of virgin materials and volatile amine catalysts.
