Modeling of the inverse extrudate swell problem by the use of the polyflow system

Abstract

The inverse extrudate swell problem (Fig. 1) was modeled in generalized Newtonian fluids, i.e., fluids whose viscosity is a function of shear rate and temperature. Two selected three-dimensional types of flow, one geometrically simple (rectangular) (Figs. 2—5) and the other relatively complicated (Figs. 10—12), were modeled by using the POLYFLOW System. The modeling method was found to be useful to analyze the flow of generalized Newtonian fluids in channels of varying geometries and to design tools like extrusion dies.
