Modification of light-curable dental composite with selected polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes

Abstract

The commercial light-curable dental composite Grandio SOFlow was subjected to modification with selected polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes containing methacrylic (M-POSS) or acrylic (A-POSS) groups. Photopolymerization was carried out using LED lamp with a real power of 1400 mW/cm2 continuously for 60 s on one side of the sample. The stress generated by the filling was calculated on the basis of the elasticity theory. The polymerization efficiency and mechanical properties of polymerized composites were also evaluated, including diametral tensile strength (DTS), three-point bending strength and Vickers microhardness. It was found, that the lowest shrinkage stress of ~ 9 MPa was generated by the composite modified with 2 wt % M-POSS or 5 wt % A-POSS. The modification also leads to a slight decrease in hardness and three point flexural strength, while maintaining a comparable DTS value of a material containing 2 wt % M-POSS. In the case of modification with 5 wt % A-POSS, a decrease in all strength parameters is observed, but they still remain at a satisfactory level and are comparable to the properties of flow materials available commercially.
