Elastomeric styrene-isoprene-styrene (SIS) block copolymer modified with a borone derivative as compatibilizer for PE-LD/PS an PP/PS mixtures

Abstract

The synthesis of a novel compatibilizer from a styrene-isoprene-styrene block copolymer and 9-borabicyclo [3,3,1]-nonane (9-BBN) and its application in compatibilizing thermodynamically immiscible PE-LD/PS and PP/PS mixtures (Figs. 2, 3) has been presented. The influence of the compatibilizer (2 or 6 wt. %) on the structure of the obtained composites was evaluated. SEM micrographs of the fractured surfaces of the products indicated a relatively better interphase adhesion of the compatibilized compositions (Figs. 4 and 5). TG and DSC thermal analysis (Figs. 6 and 7; Table 1) confirmed an interaction of the crystalline structure of the studied polyolefins as well as an increased thermal resistance of the compatibilized mixtures. The application of the synthesized SIS/9-BBN modifier enhances the interface adhesion of the studied polymeric systems in a crucial manner and enhances their mechanical parameters.
