Effect of poly(butylene terephthalate) functionalized with 2,2'-(1,3-phenylene)-bis(2-oxazoline) on the structure and properties of polyamide 6 blends with textile waste containing poly(ethylene terephthalate)

Abstract

The blends of polyamide 6 (PA6, 65 wt. parts), textile waste containing poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET, 35 wt. parts, Table 1) with poly(butylene terephthalate) (PBT) functionalized with 2,2'-(1,3-phenylene)-bis(2-oxazoline) (PBO) were prepared using a co-rotating twin-screw extruder. The effects of a presence and amount of PBT - PBO on thermal properties (Table 2) and phase structures of the blends obtained (Table 3) were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (Fig. 1), scanning electron microscopy (Fig. 2 and 3) and selective solubility in formic acid (Table 4). The blends show heterogenic structures stabilized at microphase level. This is a result of chemical reactions going during the extrusion process (probably the reactions of PA and PET functional groups with oxazoline groups built-in into PBT [equation (1), (3) and (4)]. PBT - PBO presence improves the mechanical and processing properties of the blends (Table 5-7). The results of investigations show the compatibilizing effect of PBO.
