Effects of butanetetracarboxylic acid and chitosan on the properties of formaldehyde free finish for cotton fabrics

Abstract

The effects of butanetetracarboxylic acid (BTK acid) in amount up to 40 kg/m3 and chitosan in amount up to 5 kg/m3 on application properties of finish baths were determined. The baths were based on the products of the reaction of citric acid with ethyl esters of short-chain aliphatic diacids [Dimal MC, Formula (I)]. The finish based on BTK acid modified Dimal MC more efficiently gives the fabric wrinkle resistance in the presence of chitosan (Fig. 1). Addition of chitosan improves also shrinkproof performance of the fabrics (shrinkage decrease - Fig. 2). The best results were obtained for the impregnation bath containing chitosan in concentration of 1.2 kg/m3. Introduction of hydrophobic chitosan into the bath in amount 0.3-1.2 m3 decreases slightly wettability of the fabrics. The presence of both BTK acid and chitosan in the bath practically does not change water absorbability of the fabric.
