Polyetherols with purine ring

Abstract

A new one-stage method of preparation of polyetherols with purine ring in the reaction of ethylene carbonate (WE) with uric acid (KM) [equation (3)] has been developed. Use of carbonate, non-flammable and non-toxic (in contrast to oxiranes used up to now), and significantly better thermal stability of polyetherols obtained are advantages of this method. The effects of the synthesis conditions (Table 1) [i.e. initial KM:WE molar ratio, type and amount of a catalyst used (KOH, K2CO3, DABCO) and temperature] on necessary reaction time and selected physical properties of the products were investigated. The properties (surface tension, refraction index, viscosity and density) were presented in the form of equations describing their temperature dependence in the range 20-80 °C (Table 3). Their values at temp. 20 °C are also presented (Table 4). Thermal stability of polyetherols (Fig. 3) was determined using thermal analysis method. The course of the synthesis was investigated using 1H NMR (Fig. 1) and IR (Fig. 2) methods as well as chromatographic analysis of by-products (Table 2). They are glycols from ethylene to tetraethylene ones.
