The influence of blowing extrusion process of PA film on its structure and physical properties

Abstract

The effect of the process of blowing extrusion of PA film on its structure and physical properties (measured by transmission microscopy, DSC, small angle light scattering, X-ray diffraction, IR spectroscopy) as well as mechanical properties at tension (Tables 3 and 4, Figs. 5-8) was characterized. The flow conditions affect (in complex way) the mechanisms causing molecular orientation of the molten plastic (Fig. 4) and the same way affect the mechanical properties. Strong bi-axial orientation of the film plane in comparison to the film thickness has been found. The reason of it is longitudinal drawing of the film sleeve. Lack of crosswise drawing is caused by negative degree of blow-up ratio. The orientation of macromolecules happens as a result of creation of the proper flow velocity gradients of the plastic, including strong lengthened flow at the enhanced relaxation time caused by lowering the temperature of plastic at the head nozzle. The analysis of experimental results show that film properties are strongly affected by the screw construction and extrusion conditions. In the classic PA6 film blowing extrusion good mechanical properties the same time similar in both directions of the film sleeve can be obtained which is important in case of using the film sleeve for packaging purposes, e.g. as covers for cured meat products, where the film load in transversal direction can be twice more than in longitudinal one.
