Natural rubber and selected products of its chemical modification — historical outline
Abstract
Selected historical facts relating to natural rubber (NR) were presented-beginning with first contact of Europeans with the product in the 16(th) century, through development of its practical applications in the 18(th) century and particularly n the 19(th) century (discovery of vulcanization, mastication, onstruction of spreading machine, open mill and calender, iscovery of ebonite), to contemporary achievements in odification of NR. A detailed discussion has been given of hlorinated NRs, epoxidized NRs and certain modified NRs (e.g. somerized or deproteinated NR), underlining their valuable seful properties and application opportunities. Information resented in the paper allows to conclude that NR will continue to be a frequently used product in the forthcoming years.
