Assessment of the effect of biochemical surface modification of polyester fibres on the physiological comfort properties of textile products

Abstract

The paper describes the solutions in the area of finishing polyester textiles aimed to ensure physiological comfort of textile products. The materials were subjected to biochemical modification using hydrolytic enzymes (esterases, which cause the selective cleavage of ester bonds on the surface of polyester fibre creating new reactive hydroxyl and carboxyl groups) and subsequently treated with antimicrobial agent. The effect of enzymatic modification on the hygroscopic properties of polyester material as well as the durability of antibacterial activity to multiple laundering was evaluated. The results of the investigation indicate new technological opportunities to acquire the special functional properties of textiles by using surface modification of polyester fibres.
