Polymeric biocides based on N-halamines: current state-of-the art

Abstract

This article constitutes a literature review on the biocide polymers based on N-halamines, macromolecular compounds in which oxidative halogen, Cl(I), is attached to nitrogen atom. The main raw materials most often applied to synthesis of these antimicrobial plastics have been described. There are derivatives of following organic compounds: oxazolidone, imidazolidinone and hydantoine (structures VI–VIII). The properties and methods of their preparation are shown (reactions 1–3). The next part presents the recent achievements in polymerization, grafting and physical modification leading to obtaining biocide macromolecular compounds. N-halamine polymers are applied in textile industry (clothes, gloves, socks, etc.), in production of water filters and air filters, as well as protecting coatings in different industrial and medical fields (e.g. hospital equipments, bathroom accessories, cover of hulls). The mechanism of disinfection, possiblity regeneration and perspective of developments of these polymers have been also reported.
