Natural polymers in designing modern medical materials with antimicrobial properties. Part II, Antimicrobial activation methods for medical materials

Abstract

Strategies for imparting antibacterial activity to biopolymer medical materials have been presented. Various currently used antimicrobial agents and the mechanisms responsible for their controlled release at the site of wound were described. The emphasis was put on antimicrobial peptides as a new group of agents that are the subject of advanced clinical trials (Table 1, Fig. 1). The choice of chitosan — the only commercially available biopolymer with antimicrobial activity — as a possible matrix for advanced medical materials designed for the controlled delivery of active agent (Table 2), has been justified.
