X-ray diffration studies on the degree of crystallinity in polypropylene films by the Marquart—Levenberg optimization procedure

Abstract

The degree of crystallinity (S-k) of six samples of an extruded i-PP F-401 film was studied by XRD (D-500 diffractometer and CuKalpha rays) in relation to the temperature (20-70degreesC) of extruder's cooling rolls. The difractograms were decomposed by the M-L method into component curves (Figs. 7-8); the curves showing half-widths lower than 4degrees were assigned to the crystal phase and the remaining curves were attributed to the amorphous phase. As the temperature of the cooling rolls was increased, the Sk values rose almost linearly to attain a maximum value of 56% (Table 2, Fig. 9); so rose the degree of hazing (Z) (Fig. 9). The present method lends itself to measuring Sk in polymeric materials and needs no amorphous standards.
