Assessment of influence of extrusion method on selected properties of wood-polymer composites using Taguchi method of experiment planning

Abstract

The selected mechanical and physical properties of the composites of recycled high density polyethylene (rPE-HD) filled with wood chips (10, 25 and 50 wt %) obtained by two methods of extruding: classic screw and screw-disc were investigated. The influence of three process parameters: width of the chink of disc zone (Ws), rotational speed of the screw (n) and mass fraction of wood filler (i) on the composite properties was investigated. The experiments were planned using the Taguchi method to find optimal extrusion process parameters and mixture composition, taking into account the highest possible properties of the extrudate.
