Visualization of supermolecular structures in polyurethane ionomers using atomic force microscopy method

Abstract

The samples of polyurethane (PUR) cationomers and anionomers synthesized from 2,4- and 2,6-tolylene diisocyanate, polycaprolactone diol and ionogenic monomers - N-methyldiethanoloamine or 2,6-bis-hydroxy propionic acid, respectively, extended with 1,6-hexamethylenediamine in aqueous medium, were the subjects of investigations. The results of visualization of supermolecular structures at the level of domains consisted of rigid and soft segments building polyurethane chain were presented and discussed in details (Figs. 1-8). The character of surface structures formed on the metallic base as a result of water evaporation from aqueous dispersions of PUR ionomers investigated has been also determined (Figs. 9-12). Greater diversity of structures has been found in cationomers. It was explained by their higher polarity of the surface due to additional possibility of hydrogen bonds formation and ionic interactions occurring. Possibility to use PUR ionomers for the production of anticorrosive coatings and binders for ceramic powder coatings is a practical aspect of this work.
