General characteristics and possible applications of poly(aspartic acid) (here: PKA) have been presented on the basis of literature data (mainly patents). PKA shows such specific properties as atoxicity, water solubility, hygroscopicity and biodegradability which let use it in medicine, environment protection, agriculture and cosmetics. The structure of PKA, what can appear either in cyclic or linear form, has been discussed. Three methods of PKA synthesis: from N-carboxyanhydrids of amino acids, from aspartic acid monomer (by heating way) or from amino maleic acid (a product of maleic anhydride and ammonia reaction) have been widely described.
