Ionomeric block copolymers : preparation, characteristics and application

Abstract

Block copolymers poly(ethylene oxide) - polyacrylonitrile (PEOX-b-PAN) and ionomeric block copolymers: poly(ethylene oxide) - copolymer of acrylonitrile/2-acrylamide-2-methylpropane sulphonic acid [PEOX-b-(AN-co-AMPS)(n+m)] or poly(ethylene oxide) - copolymer of acrylonitrile/acrylic acid [PEOX-b-(AN-co-AA)(n+m)] were synthesized with the use of macro-azo-initiator (MAI) (Table 1) containing azo groups. MAI is a product of a reaction of poly(ethylene oxide) methyl ether and 2,2'-azobisisobutyronitrile [equation (1)]. The effects of molecular weight of initial PEOX used for MAI synthesis as well as the concentrations of MAI and AA or AMPS (Tables 2-4, respectively) on the conversion degree, composition and intrinsic viscosity of the product were investigated. The products obtained were characterized using FT-IR and H-1 NMR methods as well as GPC curves (Figs. 1-4). The fibers showing strength properties, suitable for technical goods (Table 5), were obtained from the solutions of the block copolymer PEOX-b-PAN and ionomeric block copolymer PEOX-b-(AN-co-AMPS)(n+m).
