Olefin polymerization catalysts

Abstract

Review paper (presenting references including the 1999-2001 period) devoted to the history of theoretical research and experimental work in the field of olefin polymerization catalysts. The important role of this research in development of HDPE manufacturing processes has been underlined. Three generations of Ziegler-Natta catalysts were characterized, i.e.: classical catalysts, systems with slight content of electron donors and catalysts on carriers. Most attention was devoted to catalysts supported on MgCl2, discussing in detail the role of Lewis' bases in such systems. A detailed discussion of various metallocene catalysts activated by aluminoxanes, considering their specific structure and activity was made. A number of current research topics were presented, i.e. methylaluminoxane replacement in metallocene catalysts by other co-catalysts (activators), generation of predictable active donor ligand site structures, and experiment based theoretical investigations using computerized molecular modeling methods.
