Proecological dispersions for surface modification of cellulosic materials. Part II. Modification of paperboard surfaces with Candelilla wax—biopolymer hybrid systems

Abstract

The aim of this study was to determine the composition of the film-forming wax dispersion in Candelilla wax/biopolymer system, which provides good flow properties and improved barrier properties in relation to the initial paperboard material. Three different concentrations (19, 22 and 25 %) of biopolymer (starch sodium octenyl succinate, OSA starch) in the system and various concentrations (2.5; 5; 7.5; 10; 12.5 %) of hydrophobic component (Candelilla wax) were used. The system in which the concentration of hydrophilic film-forming substance was 22 % and the total concentration of hydrophobic substances was 12.5 % (including 9.6 % Candelilla wax as vapour barrier controller and 2.9 % jojoba wax as plasticizer) was selected as the optimum film-forming composition. The content of the emulsifier Tween 20 in the composition was 2 %. It was shown that the obtained coatings decrease the water vapour permeability of paperboard material (Figs. 1—3, 5) and increase their resistance to water and fat (Table 2, 3). At the same time, a small deterioration in mechanical properties (tensile strength and elongation at break) of cellulosic materials has been found due to their surface modification (Table 4).
