Studies on the influence of soaking and ultraviolet irradiation ageing on the structure of compatibilized PP/PA 6 mixtures

Abstract

The results of investigations on the crystallinity and structure of polypropylene, polyamide 6 and their mixtures have been presented. The mixtures prepared in compositions of 30, 50 and 70 wt. % of polypropylene in relation to the polyamide using polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) as compatibilizing agent. The influence of soaking, UV irradiation ageing or both on the crystallinity and structure on polypropylene and polyamide 6 virgin samples, as well as on their mixtures was determined. On the basis of obtained DSC curves and optical microscope images (Table 2, Figs. 1-10), it was concluded, that soaking and UV irradiation caused a significant increase of the crystalline phase in all the studied samples, while the melting temperature range and degree of crystallinity did not change significantly. An increase in the resistance to UV-induced ageing after preliminary soaking of the samples was also observed.
