Modification of polymers with the application of ion beam bombardment. Part I. History, recent developments, and perspectives for development

Abstract

This paper constitutes a review of the literature focusing on the high-energy ion beam bombardment (Fig. 2) for the modification of the surface layers of polymeric materials. An increase in interest in the application of this technique for the modification of polymers as well as metals and ceramics has been observed in recent years (Fig. 1). A schematic representation of the ion implanter (Fig. 5) and a detailed description of its principles of operation was presented. The mechanism of the interaction taking place between the accelerated ion and the polymer surface, taking into consideration the specific macromolecular structure of the material (Figs. 3, 4 and 6) was discussed. The modification process of the surface layer of the polymer as a result of ion bombardment was discussed with special attention on the changes in the chemical structure, crosslinking, and the degradation of the macromolecules (Figs. 7, 9, 10). The data presented in the literature from studies on the influence of high-energy ion beams on selected physical properties such as mechanical, tribological, wetness and adhesion (Figs. 8, 12-17), and also on characteristic properties of functional polymers such as antimicrobial, antifungal and thrombocompatibility (Figs. 18-20) have been evaluated. A continuation of this topic based on original data will focus on the influence of ion beam bombardment on the properties of rubber will be presented in Part II.
