Modelling of the polymer melt flow in a counter-rotating twin-screw extrusion process. Part I. The simulation of melt flow

Abstract

A computer program for the simulation of polymer melt flow has been developed on the basis of an earlier composite mathematical model calculated with the application of numerical Finite Element Method (FEM) for a counter-rotating twin-screw extrusion process (Figs. 1 -3). The simulation was performed for various processing conditions defined by the material characteristics, screw geometry and technological parameters of the extrusion process. The modelling results were presented as a function of dimensionless melt flow rate as well as dimensionless pressure gradient (Figs. 4 -13).
