Possibility of application of polyurethane foam wastes for heat-insulating materials preparation

Abstract

Solid wastes of rigid polyurethane (PUR) foam were liquefied with diethylene glycol in the limited glycolysis process. Glycolysis products obtained were used to substitute (in the amounts up to 50 wt. %) the polyol mixtures in new PUR compositions (Table 1) used for foamed heat-insulating materials preparation. Advantageous effects of addition of 15-30 wt. % of glycolysis products on selected useful properties of the foams obtained, namely compression strength, apparent density, thermal conductivity (Fig. 2 and 3) as well as on water absorption and closed cells' content (Fig. 4) were found. Addition of glycolysis product in the amount exceeding 40 wt. % leads to formation of the foams not useful for practical application.
