A series of dyes having indoloquinoxaline skeleton containing different amount and type of heavy atoms (Cl, Br, I) were synthesized. The obtained compounds were tested as potential photoinitiators for free radical polymerization initiated with visible light. The efficiency of the photoinitiators was characterized by determination of initial polymerization rate using trimethylolpropane triacrylate (TMPTA) as a monomer. In the photoinitiating systems studied, the dye plays the role of an acceptor of electrons or hydrogen atoms, while the coinitiator acts as a donor of electrons or hydrogen atoms. The effectiveness of photoinitiated polymerization of TMPTA depends on the amount and type of heavy atoms (Cl, Br, I) incorporated into the structure of indoloquinoxaline.
